After days of experiencing thousands of small earthquakes, anticipation reached its peak for a fresh volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula. Finally, on July 10, 2023, a 900m fissure appeared just north of the Meradalir crater. According to scientists, this thrilling new eruption is believed to be approximately twice the size of recent eruptions in the area.
We’ll embark on the hiking trail surrounding the lava field remnants of the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption. The initial 500m-1000m section is the steepest, followed by a flat dirt track. The final 2km leading to the new volcano at Litli Hrutur is the most challenging part, as the trail has not yet been improved. This section is characterized by mossy and bumpy terrain, requiring careful navigation. It is considered a difficult hike. The total distance is 18km (9km each way), with approximately 2.5 hours needed for each leg of the journey.
We’ll venture as close to the active volcano as possible, taking into account factors such as gas levels, weather conditions, and safety warnings from the rescue squad.
Observe the pure magic of witnessing a volcanic eruption and let us share this wonderful experience with you.

Depending on the duration of the volcano hike, we may skip the following stop.
At Seltún you can view the effect that geothermal waters can have on an environment. Walk along the wooden paths that wind between boiling and hissing mud pools and streams of natural hot water flowing over the colorful ground and rock. The air is thick with the smell of sulphur emitted from these hot-springs. Beneath the surface, the hot water dissolves minerals such as sulphur from the rocks and ground soil, leading to this distinctive stinch. Two viewing platforms overhang the area allowing you a 360 degree point of view over the area.
These afternoon and evening departures from Reykjavík Iceland take you directly to the Fagradalsfjall volcano area in Geldingalur valley to witness the miracle of land forming before our very eyes. This is the site of the most recent active volcano in Iceland
