Join this expedition to the South Coast with a hike on Sólheimajökull glacier. You’ll stop at the Kodak-moment machine waterfalls Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss, and then you’ll head to the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean at Reynisfjara “The Black Sand beach.” The best part is, you’ll get toon top of Sólheimajökull glacier. All in one day!
This tour starts by picking you up from your accommodation in Reykjavík. The famous Road 1 along the South Coast is packed with stunning sights. The first you will come to is a waterfall you can walk all the way around, the famous Seljalandsfoss. The stream that feeds it comes from the famed glacier and volcano Eyjafjallajökull, the one that erupted in 2010.
Further along, your eyes will meet another incredible waterfall, the broader and more powerful Skógafoss. If the weather is especially good, you should also be able to see across the ocean to the Westman Islands.
Your next stop after these waterfalls will be the glacier tongue of Sólheimajökull. Here, you will be provided with all the equipment you need to scale it, told about safety, and then led onto an exhilarating and fascinating glacier hike.
The ice cap is otherworldly as it is a mixture of glacial ice and volcanic ashes. There are very few places in the world where ascending a glacier looks like you have landed in the moon.
After the glacier hike, you’ll continue along the coast to the famous black sand beach called Reynisfjara. This area is renowned for its strange geology, with the enormous Dyrhólaey arch, with its hexagonal basalt columns, and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar said to be the remains of two trolls petrified by the sun.
Pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation in Reykjavík. See list when booking.
